Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), sometimes referred to as chronic obstructive lung disease (COLD), chronic obstructive airway disease (COAD), chronic airflow limitation (CAL) and chronic obstructive respiratory disease (CORD), is a common lung disease.
Two of the most common lung conditions covered by COPD are chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
Chronic bronchitis occur when the lining of the airways are clogged with mucus making it hard to breathe. Emphysema on the other hand, occur when the air sacs at the end of the airways breakdown preventing passage of air and making it hard to breathe.
In clinical practice, COPD is defined by its characteristically low airflow on lung function tests. In contrast to asthma, this limitation is poorly reversible and usually gets progressively worse over time.
